ME 7205 – Advanced Dynamics

Catalog Description: ME 7205 Advanced Dynamics
Particle dynamics, system of particles, impulse and momentum, energy concepts, Lagrange's equations, kinematics of rigid body motion, dynamics of a rigid body. (3 cr) Restriction: Graduate students and qualified undergraduates.

Prerequisite(s): ME 7000 (Advanced Engineering Analysis) or instructor’s approval.

Textbook/Required Material:  Greenwood, D. T., Principles of Dynamics, Second Edition, Prentice‑Hall, 1988. Selected handout materials to supplement text.

Course Assignments:

* Three exams

* Several assigned MATLAB projects

* About eight homeworks will be assigned and graded

Course Objectives: The objectives of this course are to introduce to the students the basic and advanced topics in particle and rigid body dynamics in plane and space.

Topics Covered:

1- Introduction:  vector algebra.

2- Particle Kinematics: motion (position, velocity, and acceleration) of a particle in different coordinate systems.

3- Particle Dynamics: equation of motion, work & energy, impulse & momentum, direct integration, solution of differential equations.

4- System of Particles:  equations of motion, work & energy, impulse & momentum, collisions.

5- Orbital Motion: Kepler's laws and Newton's law of gravitation, orbital relationship, satellite orbits, perturbation theory.

6- Lagrange's Equations: degrees of freedom, constraints, generalized forces and generalized coordinates, virtual work.

7- Rigid Body Kinematics: translational and rotational motion (position, velocity, and acceleration) of a rigid body, Euler angles.

8- Rigid Body Dynamics:  equations of motion, D'Alembert principle.
